The Ecocert Certification

ECOCERT is an inspection and certification body whose activity in this capacity is controlled by public authorities and legislation.

ECOCERT, as a certification body, undertakes to:

  • verify compliance with specifications through scheduled yearly visits and unannounced visits which can take place at any time in order to inspect installations, plots of land, buildings, production methods, ingredients, accounts, packaging, transport, etc.
  • where such standards are observed, issue a licence awarded annually to the operator, attesting to the latter’s certification by an inspection body,
  • issue a certificate after inspection establishing the conformity of each product or service with the prescribed methods of organic production. The validity of this certificate varies from 12 to 18 months.
The ECOCERT group of companies
  • is present in six European countries and 15 other countries in the form of subsidiaries or agencies; active on a permanent basis in 80 countries,
  • covers more than 30,000 farmers and more than 5,000 firms,
  • deals with 80,000 certified products (average number of products per operator times number of operators),
  • has a team of more than 250 engineers and technicians,
  • has the ability to detect with great accuracy points of non-conformity to specifications,
  • enjoys growth of 10% per annum.

Ecocert's activity can be divided into three main spheres:
Inspection and certification

ECOCERT’s core activity is to guarantee strict compliance with specifications applicable to products, systems or services. Issue of the certificate offers a guarantee of safety to the consumer or user.

Drafting of prescribed methods

ECOCERT drafts prescribed methods in partnership with professionals in the sector concerned in accordance with a proven methodology. These methods, which must be based on objective and quantifiable criteria, may be registered. Ecocert ensures the design of the inspection plan and its objectives in terms of quality, origin or traceability.

Training

A professional training organisation, Ecocert shares its know-how in its fields of expertise: regulations, audit management, food safety, traceability, management systems (environment, quality, safety), etc.

Organic produce: farming’s contribution to sustainable development

Organic farming is a response to the environmental crisis as it affects agriculture and the food industry. Ecocert seeks to make a positive difference to the global environment through certification, thereby encouraging sustainable development.
